Overview

  • STRONG monetary policy conservative with deep expertise in monetary policy history and reform
  • Author of the Utah Legal Tender act which made gold and silver legal tender in Utah (sound money for a sound future)
  • Recruited John Dougall as sponsor
  • John Valentine was Senate sponsor
  • Mike Lee, Rand Paul and Jim DeMint sponsored a bill called the Sound Money Promotion act which would remove capital gains on precious metals to encourage other states to follow Utah’s lead.
  • Insurance attorney specializing in professional liability for attorneys
  • JD/MBA from BYU, practicing law for 25 years
  • Has a great deal of experience working with the Legislative Research Office which helps legislators write the legal language for bills
  • promises to read every bill he votes on, unlike many in government today
  • Member of the American Principles Project based in DC
  • monetary policy reform group
  • Believes that if Utah can become an “oasis of liberty” through reforms, we will become a destination for businesses worldwide and we will attract more capital
  • Says he has already seen this happening because of many of the conservative reforms we’ve already pushed through the legislature
  • Believes that a strong values foundation will also lead to prosperity

Pros:

  • Has already worked to get major legislation through the legislature and is experienced in building both state wide and even some national support
  • Has a vision for where Utah needs to be headed
  • Will bring needed expertise to the legislature.

Cons:

  • Like Vito Corleone in The Godfather, “He’s too modest…”  It took 45 minutes of interviewing before I found out that Larry was responsible for Utah’s gold standard law, and then he only mentioned it in passing while explaining to me (at my request) how he knew so much about Utah’s Legislative Research Office.  In fact, the whole reason I had to “interview” Larry was because he held back so much during his LD27 training speech that I barely had any notes from it.

Questions:

  • After a big win like Utah’s gold standard law, what’s next?  Can you be a leader on other legislative issues as well?

Conclusion:

Larry Hilton is a tremendous asset to Utah.  Even if he has only one more big idea for reform, it would be a big win for Utah if he were elected to serve in the Legislature.
